Professors from the University of Pretoria Visit TUFS

On Friday, August 22, 2025, Professor Frans Swanepoel and Professor Margaret Chitiga-Mabugu from the University of Pretoria (Republic of South Africa), one of our partner universities, visited TUFS during their trip to Japan for the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9).
On the occasion of the visit, President Nobuo Haruna, Professor Shinichi Takeuchi (Director of the African Studies Center), and Professor Chizuko Sato participated in discussions, exchanging views on further promoting academic exchange between the two universities.
Subsequently, a hybrid exchange meeting was held under the theme “Challenges and Opportunities for Inter-University Collaboration between Japan and Africa,” involving Japanese partner universities that have agreements with the University of Pretoria. Face-to-face participants included Professor Mariko Iijima Vice President of Sophia University and Professor Mikiko Nishimura of International Christian University. Online participants included Professor Tatsuya Kusakabe of Hiroshima University, Professor Norifumi Miyokawa of Hokkaido University, Professor Emeritus Motoki Takahashi and Associate Professor Hidenori Harada of Kyoto University, and Professor Hiroaki Ozawa Vice President of Naruto University of Education. Discussions focused on developing collaboration from individual university partnerships into a broader university network between Japan and Africa as a whole.
